General Camp Information
ABOUT OUR CAMP
The Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp is a co-educational, sleep-away
camp for youth entering grades 4-10. The camp is operated by Cornell
Cooperative Extension of Nassau County. The camp is licensed and inspected by
the Suffolk County Department of Health and accredited by the American Camp
Association. ACA accreditation signifies to parents and the public that our camp
cares enough to thoroughly review its operational practices, seek the wisdom of
other camp professionals, and make necessary improvements to comply with
professional camp standards. ACA standards are recognized by courts of law and
government regulators as the standards for camp.

CAMP PHILOSOPHY
Resident youth camping offers young people many opportunities for growth and
continued learning, including the development of:
  • An increased sense of independence, self-confidence and self-reliance
  • A greater knowledge of the natural world and the inter-connection of all
    living things
  • An appreciation and acceptance of social and cultural differences
  • An understanding that flexibility, sharing and consideration of others are
    essential for group living
  • An excitement and enthusiasm for new experiences
  • New and lasting friendships

CAMP PROPERTY AND FACILITY
The camp is located on the North Fork of Long Island in the town of Riverhead.
The camp's 140 acre natural setting is situated in a unique environmental
combination of woodlands, bluffs, farmland and Long Island Sound beach
frontage. This 140 acre natural setting includes a 40 acre work and learn farm,
indoor horse riding arena, low and high adventure course, waterfront for
swimming, nature center for investigation of native fish and wildlife species,
extensive woodland for nature study and overnight camping, baseball field,
basketball and tennis courts, sand court for beach volleyball and open areas for
sports, outdoor cooking, recreation and much more.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Boys and Girls stay in separate living areas with different sleeping and bathing
facilities.  Campers sleep in a community of rustic cabins with 8-10 other campers
of a similar age and two counselors. Campers must provide their own bedding
(sleeping bag or blankets, pillow, sheet). Bathroom facilities with hot showers and
toilets are centrally located within each living area.

FOOD
Food is plentiful and prepared daily by resident cooks who are certified food
handlers. The menu reflects a variety of choices and tastes including vegetarian
options. Our salad bar also offers campers a variety of fruits, vegetables and
alternate choices. Meals are served buffet style in our dining hall. Every session
offers campers an all-camp picnic “Old Fashioned Barbeque” and weekend
campers enjoy a “Sunday Brunch”.

GRADES
Young people currently in grades 3-9 and entering grades 4-10 in the fall may
attend camp. Campers reside in cabins with other campers of similar age.

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Camp safety is our highest priority. We maintain high staff to camper ratios and
train all staff in safety procedures. Our camp nurses live at camp during the
camping season, and our camp pediatrician is on call. Central Suffolk Hospital is
approximately 4 miles from the camp. All staff and campers MUST submit the
completed Camp Health Examination Form by
May 15, 2008.

CAMP SESSIONS
All camp sessions start on Monday and end on Saturday. Arrival time at camp on
Monday is
10-11 am. Campers may not arrive before 10 am. Bus transportation is
also provided and departs from Hicksville at 8:30 am.  Departure time on Saturday
is
10-11 am. Except for registered weekend campers, campers may not stay at
camp past 11 am on Saturday. Campers may enroll for a maximum of 4 sessions.
Campers will not be excused or dismissed during a session or prior to the end
of a session except for emergencies approved by the camp director.

EXTENDER WEEKEND PROGRAM
There are 5 extender weekends available so that campers may extend their stay at
camp over a weekend. See page 5 of our camp brochure for fees and schedule of
extender weekend program. Campers may only register for a weekend program
after or between sessions.

CAMPER CONDUCT
In the interest of the health, safety and welfare of all camp participants, campers
are expected to comply with camp rules and regulations and conform to the daily
routines of camp. Failure to do so may result in dismissal from camp without a
refund for the remainder of that session. Campers and their parents will receive
the Parent-Camper Handbook which describes in detail the guidelines for camper
behavior.
